This is his story, and he says he's sticking to it.
Born in Brownwood, July 8, 1970.
Boucned around west Texas from Nacogdoches, Richland Springs (pop.132) to San Angelo where he made it through high school. Played guitar in his bedroom for hours at a time instead of going out and partying...Boring dude.
Had a rock band, Pryzm. Name pretty much says it all...
Graduated from San Angelo Central High School, home of the fighting Bobcats, in 1988. Moved away to college to become a rock star. Started singing opera instead. Yes, he dressed up like a dragon and wore tights on occassion.
Joined the existing band, Sons of The Desert, January of 1990. 1990 - 1995 palyed all over central Texas at every VFW and SPJST still standing. (For those non-Texan folks, Google GPJST. (Can't repeat what he was told it stood for.)
Pitched some songs to Nashville and got some attention from Sony/Tree Publishing. After a club changed formats--from country to hip-hop overnight--Drew didn't think the band could upll off a night of hip-hop. Good call, Drew. So they needed to fill two weeks of dates with a new venue. In pops the Wild Horse Saloon. Word got around that a killer band from Texas was coming to town.
Was offered one deal over the phone on the trip up to Nashville. Had a showcase for Sony two days later. A song into the showcase the PA system almost exploded. Doug Johnson from Sony offered them a deal. He left sony before the CD was released.
In 1996, first single "Whatever Comes First" stays in the Billboard top ten for 4 weeks followed by a couple of songs that peak at 25. Drew gets his first couple outside cuts, one being "She's Got It All". Sony had passed on it for The SOD record... 12 weeks later it was at number one on the Billboard Chart.
Cut the sophomore CD which included "Goodbye" Earl". A couple tracks co-produced by Tim McGraw. Had a falling out with the label concerning Goodbye Earl being a single. Label suits swore that it would never be a single from The Sons or the Chicks. Decided to leave Sony on the hunch they might not be telling the Truth.
Moved over to MCA with Tony Brown, knowing he wasn't going anywhere. Cut the album, "Change". Tony left a month after they released it. Started feeling confident that they could bring about regime change at any label, no matter how big.
2000--Got to #8 on the Gavin charts with "What I Did Right". Another tune that Drew co-wrote. At the same time, The Sons took home 3 ACM's and a CMA for their path on "I Hope You Dance". Went on to win several other awards that year for various projects.
2003--settled out of court with MCA.
Drew and fam moved back to Austin, Texas to pursue solo career. Recorded his first solo CD and played all over Texas and Oklahoma. Co-writing with Texas artists, he landed a few cuts on various records.
2007--Had to have a full posterior and anterior body fusion. Took two surgeries and 11 hours under the knife. It's not nearly as fun as it sounds...Started recording background vocals for various artists including, Lee Ann Womack and Robert Earl Keen.
At present, working on his new CD. Still recording vocals for other artists. Getting back into doing shows, producing and writing. Playing acoustic shows including VFWs and SPJSTs. After all, time is a wheel in constant motion.
